Industry Update
NAA Releases 2005
First Quarter Results of Ongoing Industry Research
Study
OVERLAND PARK, KAN. –
Gross sales revenues from auctions are predicted to
climb 6.8 percent in 2005 if current trends
continue. This would bring the value of all goods
and services sold at auction in 2005 up to $216.4
billion by the end of the year.
These are the findings documented in a quarterly
report of auction industry growth being conducted by
global market research firm MORPACE International on
behalf of the National Auctioneers Association (NAA).
“The research continues to reaffirm the strength and
vitality of the auction industry,” said Mike Jones,
CAI, GPPA, NAA president. “Our members are providing
needed and wanted services for consumers around the
country and this growth reflects their success.”
The following are some other key findings documented
in the quarterly report:
-
Among NAA members, gross revenues for the first
quarter of 2005 have increased 5.3 percent from
the same period one year ago.
-
Forty-four percent of NAA auctioneers say they
have seen an increase in overall gross sales
revenue receipts for the first quarter of 2005.
-
Seventeen percent of NAA auctioneers say they
have seen no change in gross sales receipts for
the first quarter of 2005 compared to last year.
-
First quarter gross revenues from residential
real estate auctions are up almost 10 percent.
Gross revenues from commercial and industrial
real estate auctions are up 6 percent, while
land and agricultural real estate revenues are
up 3.7 percent.
Funded by the National Auctioneers Foundation, the
Auction Industry Research Study was commissioned by
the NAA in 2003 to study and document the growth of
the live auction industry. Results of the initial
study were released in July 2004 and updates are
being conducted on a quarterly basis.

AUCTIONEERS TEST THEIR SKILLS AT ANNUAL BID CALLING CONTEST
Auctioneers From Waynesville and Kent Take State Honors
Timothy Lile of Waynesville, Ohio and Dennis C. Eberhart of Kent, Ohio won
the 1997 Ohio State Fair Bid Calling Contest at the State Fair today. They
competed against 32 auctioneers in the categories of salesmanship, speaking, and
bid calling.
Eberhart won the Level II contest for auctioneers with eight or more years
experience. He is a licensed auctioneer with Yankee Trader Auction and Realty
Co. Lile, also a licensed auctioneer and realtor, won the Level I contest for auctioneers
with one to seven years experience.
Donna Owens, director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, and Ronald J.
Rotaru, Superintendent of the Division of Real Estate and Professional
Licensing, presented a certificate to the contest winners. The Department of
Commerce licenses auctioneers in Ohio.
"Today's contest showcased the talent and skill of Ohio's
auctioneers," Director Owens said. "Ohio is fortunate to have more
than 3,200 trained and experienced auctioneers who conduct business in such an
entertaining and fascinating manner."
The contest was sponsored by the State Fair, the Ohio Auctioneers’
Association and the State Auctioneers’ Commission. During the first round,
each contestant sold an item that they brought to the auction. Afterwards, five
finalists for each level auctioned one additional item.
Net proceeds from the sale of auctioned items totaling $3000 were donated to
the Special Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with
life-threatening illnesses.

The Department of Commerce’s display at the State Fair is located in the
northeast corner of the MarketPlace Building. The Division of State Fire Marshal
is offering children an opportunity to practice the "Crawl Under
Smoke" fire safety program. This exercise teaches children to crawl in
order to escape a fire. The Division of Unclaimed Funds is giving Ohioans an
opportunity to check their names for unclaimed funds. In addition, the Division
of Industrial Compliance has an exhibit of stuffed toys and other items safety
tested by the division.
